Pop Culture Wednesday

This week the pop culture intake has been significantly less than usual.  Not entirely sure why, but I'm guessing it's because I'm sleeping nearly ALL of the time.

Memoirs of a Geisha:

Decent movie.  A GREAT book.  I highly recommend the book.  When watching the movie, make sure you are doing it for the fantastic visuals and not the same high-caliber story found in the novel.

The Yes Men Fix The World:

These are some brave, brave men.  This is a documentary film about two activists who get themselves invited to speak at important events representing companies that have done wrong to the world.  They prepare speeches at these places to make a large impact and draw attention to the issue.  I'm surprised they haven't managed to get themselves shot yet.  Definitely worth a viewing.

United States of Tara:

This has been my FAVORITE show lately.  Yes, it displays mental illness in a completely over-the-top way, but everything else is right on.  Wonderful relationships.  I love it.

What about you guys...seen any good movies lately??

xoxo,
Annie

Hi Annie,

I felt that same way about Memoirs of a Geisha -- that the book was great and the movie just okay, but I was never able to articulate why. I'm glad you had the same reaction.

I like United States of Tara but my favorite show at the moment is the one that's on (here, at least) right before it: Nurse Jackie. Dark humor, so it might not be for everyone. But I love Edie Falco in the title role and the other characters are all funny and interesting.

I've gotten the Memoirs of a Geisha DVD out of the library twice now and returned it without watching it...it's just so long! Tough to stay up late enough to watch such a long movie.

We watched Infamous last week - I reviewed it at my blog for Movie Monday - very good.

So...maybe I'll try reading Memoirs of a Geisha instead...

Yeah, I saw that Sue! I will have to get around to watching that and Capote, as I have to say...I haven't seen either.

And Toni - I'm so going to start watching some Nurse Jackie tonight! I've heard such great things and should really get in on the party :)

I will just have to put Memoirs of a Geisha on my kindle reading list. I've been curious about it; but, never got around to it. This encourages me to raise it in priority.

I will have to see if I can find United States of Tara online. Being in Kore really limits the American TV we get. It sounds great!

Hi again, Annie. See if you can still get the Nurse Jackie from last week, called "Apple Bong." It was one of the best.

I'm glad you're enjoying United States of Tara - me too. Danny and I need to start watching 2nd season. We're just wrapping up the Buffy the Vampire series. Halfway through the final season. Kinda crushing, really.

I saw Bounty Hunter last week and really enjoyed it. It was silly, light, and I didn't think about it at all after we left the theatre. Perfect for my deteriorating attention span.

Loved reading Memoirs of a Geish. I was disappointed with the movie though ;)
